He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
