Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
