The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
