Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
